Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church
Durham, NC
Under the leadership of Jim Ward, church member and former university architect of Duke University, the building committee and the architects undertook an extensive master planning study of the site to develop the property to handle a new sanctuary, a new office facility with choir room and athletic fields.  Using the organizational precepts of the Methodist liturgy for "Word and Table", the architects developed the new sanctuary with all seats oriented toward the communion table.  The facility was developed with covered walks connecting the new sanctuary to the old church and to the new office/choir building.  Major materials consisted of brick, glass, and stucco on the exterior with painted drywall, carpet, slate, and stained wood trim on the interior.  Due to cost issues, only the church was built.
Designed by Charles Francis and Diane Filipowicz under the predecessor firm: Stephens & Francis
