Craven County Maintenance Building
New Bern, NC
In an effort to consolidate their vehicle
storage and maintenance operations, Craven
County officials contacted C. R.
Francis/Architecture to design a shop building
for the Craven County Water & Sewer
Authority and the Craven County Vehicle
Maintenance Department. Due to the
configuration of the site, the shops were
divided into two wings of four bays each,
joined by a shared strip of office spaces. The
storage/service bays receive natural light
through translucent roof panels, and are
heated by overhead radiant heaters. The
Water & Sewer shop was developed with an
area dedicated to a workshop, and the
Vehicle Maintenance Shop has a parts storage
area. Vehicle Maintenance also required an
outdoor oil storage shed, and a covered car
wash area. The facility was designed using
pre-engineered building components with the
offices clad in brick veneer facing the
residential development across the street.
