Parishioners at Christ Church faced a critical need to upgrade offices and provide handicapped access via an elevator to all parts of their existing campus in downtown New Bern. They also wished to improve the character of their congregational meeting space, The Parish House, principally by removing free- standing columns supporting the story above. In the effort to accomplish the needed renovations, other needed improvements were identified, including minor renovations of classrooms and restrooms. The overall redesign of "the core" facility created an opportunity for adding a chapel behind the sanctuary's two-story altar wall with its hallmark stained glass window. This project, together with the creation of the Ministry Center and the Youth and Music Building in remodeled storefronts across the street, resulted in renovations to all of the church's facilities supporting the historic sanctuary.
